Project History

The Animal Neighbours Project (ANP) is a community-based initiative that addresses human-wildlife conflict in urban spaces through research, education, and advocacy. Founded in Malaysia in 2014 due to human macaque conflict, the project was inspired by Dr. Sharmini Julita Paramasivam, a veterinarian from Malaysia.  Alarmed by public outcry and the lack of sustainable solutions, she recognised the need for a more informed and compassionate approach to human-wildlife coexistence.

In 2016, ANP was established as a community based project linked with the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. ANP was the first project working on human wildlife conflict in urban areas in Malaysia. ANP officially registered as an NGO in 2024 and continues its work to collaborate with local communities, universities, and government organisations to promote sustainable coexistence towards urban wildlife.
