Community Empowerment

ANP believes that empowering communities is key to fostering peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife. Through collaboration, education, and local action, communities are equipped to take ownership of coexistence efforts and implement sustainable, long-term solutions.

Coexistence Consultation

Community-led efforts are enhanced to develop coexistence strategies that reduce negative interactions between wildlife and urban neighbourhoods.

In 2019, Urban Human–Monkey Conflict Community Workshops brought together over 60 participants — including residents, researchers, NGOs, and government officials.

These workshops created a platform for dialogue and collaboration, leading to the formation of Local Action Groups (LAGs). These groups continue to work closely with ANP to manage human–monkey interactions at the community level.

Symposium: Promoting Coexistence – Developing a Collaborative Strategy to Manage Urban Human–Monkey Conflict

Hosted in 2023, this symposium gathered key stakeholders to build a joint strategy for managing human–monkey conflict in urban areas.

Participants included representatives from PERHILITAN, Perbadanan Putrajaya, Jabatan Landskap Negara, DBKL, Alam Flora Kuantan, Sabah Wildlife Department, OrangJuga, and Hijau Mikro.

The symposium encouraged cross-agency collaboration and shared responsibility in developing coordinated, humane approaches to reduce conflict and improve relationships between humans and wildlife in cities.

Monkey Guarding

Inspired by the Jane Goodall Institute Singapore’s Monkey Guards Programme, this initiative introduces trained community members to act as Monkey Guards in residential hotspots. Using gentle, non-harmful methods such as tapping sticks or making sounds, guards safely deter macaques while maintaining respect for wildlife.

The goal is to create a safe space between humans and macaques, helping the animals learn to stay away from residential areas. Monkey guards also receive training on safe behaviour around macaques and share this knowledge within their communities.

Signages for Coexistence

Informative and educational signages are placed in key locations to raise awareness about responsible behaviour around wildlife.

These signs empower local communities to remind or politely advise others against feeding monkeys and to encourage positive interactions with wildlife.

By supporting local voices, signages help strengthen community participation in promoting safe and respectful coexistence.
